What a GTA pool really costs to run each year

PoolBuilderIndex files pool maintenance as a May to September trade in the GTA, and that single fact reorganises the whole budget. Ontario Pool Services sells 9-week and 18-week packages rather than annual contracts, which is the clearest signal there is that a weekly rate on its own tells you nothing. Two companies quoting $110 a visit are quoting different totals if one of them is planning 9 visits and the other 18.

So the first question to a service company is not the rate. It is how many visits are in the package, what happens in the weeks either side of the season, and whether the opening and the closing are inside that number or billed separately.

PF Pools publishes a GTA price list, which makes it one of the few firm numbers available in this market rather than an estimate. It puts a pool closing at $530 for one visit and a pool opening at $630 across two visits, both plus HST. John C Young Design, writing about Ontario, cites a narrower $250 to $400 for a spring opening hired out, which is the range you would expect from a smaller operator or a simpler pool.

The gap between those two figures is not a contradiction. An opening billed as two visits is a different job from one billed as a single call: the second visit is usually the one that balances the water after the pool has run for a few days. Ask which shape you are being quoted before you compare the numbers.

PF Pools lists weekly pool maintenance including a digital water test and a vacuum at $100 to $120 per visit plus HST, with weekly service at $100 and biweekly at $120. Toronto Pool puts the wider Toronto market range at $100 to $150 a visit. Those two agree closely enough that a quote well outside the range is worth a question rather than a rejection: it usually means a different scope.

A one-off visit is priced differently again. PF Pools charges $175 for a standard one-off and $200 for a Friday or Saturday emergency, plus HST. If your pool needs occasional rescue rather than a routine, the one-off rate is the number that governs your year, not the weekly one.

Two real costs sit outside every service quote. Water is one: John C Young Design cites $3 to $4 per 1,000 litres in London, Ontario and an initial fill at $100 to $200. Hydro is the other, and it is the one worth acting on. GBI Pools reports that Ontario owners save $300 to $500 a year on hydro with a variable-speed pump, against a single-speed pump that can cost over $1,000 in electricity each year.

That is a pump decision made once, at build time or at replacement, that changes the running cost every year afterwards. It belongs in the conversation with a builder, not in the conversation with a service company.

Project Landscaping puts the cost of damage from improper winterisation at $2,000 to $10,000 and up, against $200 to $450 for a professional closing. That is the widest gap between a saving and its consequence anywhere in this budget, and it is a GTA-specific one: a Toronto winter does things to a badly closed pool that a mild climate does not.

Everywhere else, comparing quotes is worth doing properly. Get three, itemised, priced against the same scope and the same number of weeks, and add 13 percent before you decide what you can afford.
